Alternative Treatments For Depression

Depression is a problem that affects over 5% of adults each year. While traditional pharmaceutical treatment is available for, many people can treat their depression with alternative treatments. This article discusses several alternative treatments for depression.
Depression is defined as a persistent mental disorder presenting with depressed mood, loss of interest in pleasurable activities, feelings of guilt, sleep and appetite disturbance, and inability to care for oneself. The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that women have a lifetime risk of becoming depressed of over 20% while men have a lifetime risk of around 7%. Traditional treatment often involves psychotherapy and prescription medications such as tricyclic antidepressants, Serotonin Specific Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) or Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOs). While these medications are generally effective, they often take several months or longer to work, have unpleasant side effects and are only recommended for moderate to severe depression. Alternative treatments for depression can be helpful for milder depressive episodes and can work alongside traditional treatment for more severe cases.
Numerous studies have shown that 20 to 30 minutes of exercise several times per week can have a lifting effect on the mood, even in cases of depression. While it may be hard to get going, once a person with depression motivates themselves to begin a regimen of exercise, his or her mood will likely improve. The chosen regimen should be as simple as possible to decrease the chance of failure. This can be something as simple as a vigorous walk or performing a routine along with a DVD or television program or even something as silly as dancing to a favorite CD. Increasing the heart rate has been shown to release endorphins which are “feel good” chemicals in the body.
Light therapy has also been used to treat depression. Particularly useful in Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), light therapy focuses on exposure to full spectrum light, especially natural sunlight for several hours each day. There is a suspected link between Vitamin D deficiency and depression. Natural sunlight exposure will increase the amount of Vitamin D produced in the body. Regular exposure to natural light does not require “sunbathing” just opening the curtains or spending time outdoors and should be obtained year-round.
Dietary supplementation has also been used to boost the Serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin is one of the major neurotransmitters involved in mood regulation and is also important in quality sleep. St. Johns Wort has been used as an herbal supplement and is thought to act similarly to some antidepressants. Another dietary supplement called 5-HTP is a precursor to serotonin and is believed by many to work quite quickly in relieving symptoms of depression. Some natural health experts have even recommended adding foods high in the amino acid L-Tryptophan such as turkey or baked potatoes to the evening meal to boost Serotonin levels.
While depression will continue to plague many, it is clear there are alternative treatments available. Three of the best options appear to be exercise, light therapy and dietary supplementation.

Depression During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is the happiest phase of some women life but for some women it is a phase of fear and fright. Normally twenty percent of the women during pregnancy suffers from the common but normal depression symptoms. But some women suffers from major depression during pregnancy. Depression is a mood disorder that effects almost every women in their life. So it is not an issue of surprise if a pregnant women suffers from this disease. But the main problem is that women not go to the doctors during pregnancy for the treatment of depression. It is a danger sign for both the baby and the mother. Because they consider it as a part of other hormonal changes occurring in them during pregnancy. Depression during pregnancy is also known as antepartum depression. The Different Types Of Depression

There are many different types of depression. Depression can take many forms, and so many healthcare professionals use a number of different terms when referring to depression. Seasonal affective disorder, clinical depression, and bipolar depression are all commonly diagnosed types of depression. What really causes a lot of confusion when someone is diagnosed with depression is that it can very often overlap with another illness. Conditions such as substance abuse or an eating disorder may be confused with depression, and can make any form of depression rather hard to diagnose. The following are some very common forms of depression. You will hear the term major depression when you are experiencing one of the depressive disorders that are severe enough to require treatment. For example, say you are very active at your local gym but have experienced some type of severe emotional trauma and start to avoid the gym at all costs. It is very likely that you could be experiencing a bout with major depression. Another one of the major types of depression is bipolar depression (also known as manic depressive illness). One of the major types of depression that women are known to suffer from is postpartum depression. Circadian Rhythm Disorder Can Cause Depression

There are some people who feel that the main cause of depression is a disruption of the body’s circadian rhythms. Some believe that our body clocks no longer run our bodies. We wake because our clock radios or cell phone alarms tell us to, not because the sun has come up. We sleep because we have accomplished what we want for the day, not because the sun has set. We work indoors instead of spending our time outside where we, as humans, began. Due to this arrhythmia, our bodies are not aligned right– this unbalances the levels of hormones, neurotransmitters and other chemicals that form our moods. When these hormones are out of balance a person will suffer from Circadian Rhythm Disorder (CRD).
Researchers have studied CRD for a while. They generally agree that those who suffer from some types of depression can be made to feel better by making some lifestyle changes that will enhance their mood and lift their spirits. A well-balanced lifestyle that includes sunlight, sufficient sleep and good food will give a person a lot of energy and put them in a good mood. The ability to correct this disorder gives the sufferer the potential outlook of a healthy, happy person.
Circadian rhythms are what the body uses to manage appetite, vigor, rest, sexual arousal, and mood. So, when the body’s rhythm is out of kilter, a person suffers mood disorders and depression. The good thing is that this is a known issue: continued research has shown how to put the body back in balance. Studies have proven that realigning the circadian rhythms of the body can reduce away depression.
The study of the body’s circadian rhythms has been around since the nineteenth century. As more evidence of the importance of the body’s natural clock became apparent in the 1960′s, study intensified. The science that studies circadian rhythms this is called chronobiology.
Studies show that when the body is out of balance it can cause depression, and disorders of mood, sleep, and eating. By the 1980′s, continuing research demonstrated that without a balance of light and dark, the hormones and natural body chemicals were not released properly and so were confusing the body’s signals.
The outcome of this research is light therapy, which has proven to have good results. People need more exposure to natural sunlight. We had this exposure in the past, before we built houses that blocked out natural light. Humans require more than can be given in the minutes between leaving the house and getting into the car.

Research Pays Dividends in Learning More About Depression

There is no hiding the fact that many Americans suffer from depression. When combined with other diseases, that number greatly increases. Depression affects us all, from young children to aging adults, and everyone in between. It is a diagnosable disease and yet can be treated.

According to a study, (published in mental health magazine) “half of all people with advanced or terminal cancer suffer from depression, anxiety or adjustment disorders and could use their oncologist`s help getting treatment. ”

Depression affects many women, especially those nearing the end of the biological cycle. A recent article in Mental Health magazine they reported on the relationship between the biological clock and mental health to patients. In the U. S. Researchers, as cited, “have identified winter depression as a psychiatric illness and name it as seasonal affective disorder (SAD). ” The American Psychiatric Association (APA) in Arlington, Virginia strongly suggests “light therapy as a treatment, while psychiatrists noted that correcting abnormal circadian rhythms through exposure to light can help treat such disorders. ”

Depression also affects the youth in our society. To gain a better understanding of just how our youth suffer from depression researchers conducted “a longitudinal population-based study among 842 adolescents aged 11-16 at the baseline assessment, and aged 15-20 at follow-up. ” Accordint to the study, “the results of the study reveal that both mother-and adolescent-rated depressive symptoms predict future depression, antisocial behavior, impairment and regular tobacco use in the adolescent. ” Thus, the study concludes that “it is possible to obtain clinically useful information on adolescent depression from the child`s mother. ”

Researchers report “that the behavioral practices of pediatricians are affected by system-level changes. ” The results of the research were “based on an interview with 42 community pediatricians. ” It was reported that , “pediatricians` mean confidence levels in diagnosing depression, anxiety and oppositional defiant disorder were lessened after the intervention. ”

In a recent article in Mental Health magainze a report suggests that “the Veterans Administration (VA) still faces scrutiny from groups that are doubtful about the potential of its effort in the U. S. ” The report then goes on to say, “inorder to support the quality and scope of its mental health program, the VA has appointed 3,000 mental health professionals in 2005 and aims to add 1,000 more staff in 2007 inorder to meet the needs of returning veterans who suffer from conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), brain injuries, and depression. ”

Of course it is not as simple as just depression as there are various levels of depression. According Thomas Joiner, a professor of pyschology for the National Institue of Mental Health, there is what is called double depression. Double depression is a mood disorder that is difficult to distinguish from dysthymia or major depression alone.
